Bug with KMS at bootup on Intel Arrandale graphics chipset. This would probably be sufficient to get Kat's laptop to work.
Seems like the VGA switcheroo in the Z-series VAIOs causes problems (unless one has the high-resolution display). Might work using GRUB 2 and with forced initialisation of the video BIOS, or a newer/patched BIOS, or maybe something else.
